You may already know this, but courtroom movies are some of the best entertainment you can watch on your T.V. It’s always uplifting when you watch a good movie set in a courtroom and the underdog prevails over their goliath-like opponent. 10.) A Civil Action (1998)- This movie is based on a true story of a court case about environmental pollution that took place in Woburn, Massachusetts in the 1970′s. The real case and this movie revolve around the contamination of a local aquifer that caused fatal cases of leukemia and cancer as well as other health problems among the citizens of the town. John Travolta stars as Jan Schlichtmann, a cocky and successful personal injury lawyer, who takes on the class action lawsuit and goes to great lengths to win the case for his clients even if it ruins him. This movie also co-stars Robert Duvall who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
9.) The Client (1994)- This movie is based on the John Grisham novel of the same name. It stars Susan Sarandon as attorney Reggie Love, who is hired by a young boy with information on the whereabouts of a murdered Senator. Brad Renfro co-stars as Mark Sway, the boy who hires Reggie to protect his rights and ultimately his life, from unscrupulous law enforcement, the U.S. Attorney in charge of the Senator’s murder case, and the mafia. Tommy Lee Jones also stars as U.S Attorney “Reverend” Roy Foltrigg. This movie was one of the highest grossing movies of 1994 and Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
8.) Amistad (1997)- Steven Speilberg directed this historical film about the true story of a slave mutiny that took place in 1839 and the legal battle that followed. Even though the slaves won the case at the federal district level, it was appealed by President Martin Van Buren to the Supreme Court. With the help of ex-President John Quincy Adams, a young lawyer named Roger Sherman Baldwin is able to win the case and help the slaves return home to Africa. Matthew McConaughy stars as the lawyer Roger Sherman Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of John Quincy Adams.
7.) Primal Fear (1996)- The film tells the story of a defense attorney, Martin Vail, who defends an alter boy named Aaron Stampler, who is charged with the murder of a Catholic archbishop. Just when you think that Aaron might be innocent because of multiple personality disorder, the film concludes that Aaron was faking the whole time. Richard Gere stars as Martin Vail and Edward Norton was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as Aaron Stampler.
6.) A Few Good Men (1992)- This film was directed by Rob Reiner and stars Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Jack Nicholson. The film revolves around the trial of two US Marines charged with the murder of a fellow Marine and the tribulations of their lawyer as he prepares a case to defend his clients. It was nominated for four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing).
5.) Rules of Engagement (2000)- Samuel L. Jackson stars as Colonel Terry Childers, a marine who is brought to court-martial on charges of disobeying the rules of engagement in a military incident at an American embassy in Sana’a, Yemen, resulting in the slaughter of many civilians by Childers’ men. With the help of Col. Hayes Lawrence “Hodge” Hodges II, played by Tommy Lee Jones, he is found not guilty.
4.) The Rainmaker (1997)- A young Tennessee lawyer fresh out of law school takes the case of his life in this amazing courtroom drama. When a big insurance company tries to keep from having to pay for the care that a young man diagnosed with leukemia needs, the family decides to hire a lawyer. Rudy Baylor takes on this client in his first case after the head of his law office has to hide because he’s wanted by the feds. He must overcome many obstacles inside and outside the courtroom as he attempts to find out what it means to be a lawyer. Matt Damon stars as Rudy and some of the supporting cast include Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, Danny Glover, and Jon Voight earned a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of attorney Leo Drummond.
3.) A Time To Kill (1996)- When Tonya Hailey, an innocent little African-American girl is raped and beaten by 2 beer-guzzling rednecks, the town of Clanton, Mississippi is shocked. Her father Carl Lee Hailey is outraged, and figuring they would not be convicted, he decides to take justice into his own hands and kills them in the court house in front of numerous witnesses. Now it is up to Jake Brigance to get Carl Lee off the hook. He has people who help him, but he is up against tough D.A. Rufus Buckley. It is ultimately his task to prove that a black man can get a fair trial in Mississippi. Matthew McConaughey stars as Jake Brigance and some of the supporting cast include Sandra Bullock, Kevin Spacey, Keifer Sutherland, and Samuel L. Jackson as Carl Lee Hailey. Jackson received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
2.) My Cousin Vinny (1992)- While heading for college, Bill and Stan are arrested in Alabama when they are accused of robbing and murdering a convenience store clerk. Unable to afford an attorney, they turn to Bill’s cousin Vinny, a brash New Yorker who took six tries to pass his bar exam. The problem is, he’s only taken personal injury cases, none of which have gone to trial. Dragging along his even more abrasive fiancee Mona Lisa Vito, Vinny will have to straighten up fast, and keep out of jail himself, if he’s going to win the case. Joe Pesci stars as Vinny and Marisa Tomei plays his girlfriend Mona. Tomei won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
1.) The Social Network (2010)- Harvard undergrad and computer programming genius Mark Zuckerberg sits down at his computer and begins working on a new idea. In a fury of blogging and programming that begins in his dorm room, his idea soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history… but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications. Jesse Eisenberg stars as Mark Zuckerberg. This movie received eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.
As you can see, most of these movies garnered Academy Award nominations for the cast and crew and some even took home the prize.
